Carnivorous Plants

Leader potting mix for sundews, Venus flytraps and pitcher plants — acid, low-nutrient substrate.

Carnivorous Plants is the Leader potting mix developed with blonde peat and perlite for sundews, Venus flytraps, pitcher plants and other carnivorous species. Low in nutrients and acid in pH, it reproduces the natural habitat where roots depend on captured insects, not on the substrate.

Features

Carnivorous Plants is the dedicated Leader potting mix for growing sundews, Venus flytraps, pitcher plants and other carnivorous plants. In nature, these plants live in acid, oligotrophic (nutrient-poor) environments where the nutritional cycle depends entirely on captured insects — the substrate provides no nutrition. The formula reproduces this condition using blonde peat and perlite, creating a stable environment free from chemical interference.

Use it for spring or early-autumn repotting of drosera, dionaea (Venus flytrap), sarracenia, pinguicula, low-demand nepenthes and other carnivorous species. Perlite keeps the structure light and stable over time, preventing compaction that damages sensitive roots. Blonde peat supports the acid moisture these plants require. Important: use only rainwater or deionised water for irrigation. Never use tap water.

For all other plants — green plants, flowering plants, vegetables, succulents — choose a specific potting mix. This substrate is developed for the specific needs of carnivorous plants and does not meet standard growth requirements. Packaged in Italy with selected peat from the Baltic countries, batch after batch.

Why choose it

  • Naturally acid pH: reproduces the bog conditions where carnivorous plants grow in the wild.
  • Low in nutrients: respects the nutritional cycle of carnivorous plants, which feed on captured insects, not on the substrate.
  • Perlite: keeps the structure light and stable over time, preventing compaction that damages the sensitive roots of carnivorous plants.
  • Developed for sundews, Venus flytraps, pitcher plants, butterworts and low-demand nepenthes — not suitable for plants with standard nutritional requirements.
  • Packaged in Italy with selected peat from the Baltic countries.

Composition

  • blonde peat — naturally acid pH, water retention
  • perlite — drainage and aeration

When to use it

Suitable for spring or early-autumn repotting of drosera, dionaea, sarracenia, pinguicula and low-demand nepenthes. Use it when the plant is dormant or just coming out of winter dormancy.

How to use it

  1. Prepare the pot with a drainage hole. Do not use expanded clay — avoid it for carnivorous plants.
  2. Fill the pot with Carnivorous Plants mix without compacting too firmly. Leave 1–2 cm from the rim.
  3. Transplant the plant carefully, taking care with the sensitive roots. Place the crown level with the substrate surface.
  4. Water ONLY with rainwater or deionised water. Never use tap water — calcium kills carnivorous plants.
  5. Keep 1–2 cm of rainwater in the saucer at all times. Most carnivorous plants prefer consistently moist substrate.

Suitable for

Adatto: drosera, dionea, sarracenia, pinguicola, nepenthes

Not recommended for: All other plants (green plants, flowering plants, vegetables, succulents, acid-loving plants for repotting) — this substrate is too nutrient-poor and too acid for standard requirements. For any other crop, choose a specific potting mix.
