The best time to repot is <strong>late winter to early spring (February–April)</strong>, when plants emerge from dormancy and have the energy to grow new roots. Key signs that repotting is needed: roots pushing out of drainage holes, compacted or exhausted substrate, slowed growth, or top-heavy plants tipping over. <strong>Avoid repotting during flowering</strong> (roses, geraniums, dahlias) and during extreme heat or frost. Always choose a substrate suited to the species — universal mix for most plants, or a specific mix for acid-lovers, cacti, or orchids.
A <strong>universal substrate</strong> suits most potted plants and window boxes: medium structure, neutral to slightly acid pH, combining <strong>blonde peat</strong>, wood fiber, compost, and a starter of micronutrients. <strong>Specific substrates</strong> have composition and pH calibrated for particular needs: acid-lovers (azaleas, hydrangeas, blueberries), cacti (high drainage), orchids (coarse pine bark for aeration), and carnivorous plants (pure peat, no fertilizer). Use a universal mix for everyday gardening; switch to a specific mix only when the plant requires a particular growing condition.
It is <strong>not the best choice</strong>. Acid-lovers such as azaleas, hydrangeas, rhododendrons, blueberries, and camellias need a strongly acid pH, while citrus trees prefer only a <strong>mildly acid</strong> environment — less acid than a standard acid-lover mix. A dedicated mix combines sand, <strong>perlite</strong>, blonde peat, wood fiber, expanded clay, and a base fertilizer. The mineral components (sand, perlite, expanded clay) ensure rapid drainage, while peat and wood fiber provide organic matter and controlled moisture retention. Use it for <strong>spring repotting</strong> and autumn substrate refreshes, both indoors on a bright windowsill and outdoors on a sunny balcony or rock garden.
Orchid substrate is <strong>not really a soil</strong> — it is a blend of coarse pine bark chips (bark), sometimes combined with sphagnum moss, <strong>perlite</strong>, or <strong>coconut fiber</strong>. Epiphytic orchids (Phalaenopsis, Cattleya, Cymbidium, Dendrobium) grow on tropical tree branches, so their roots need <strong>air circulation</strong>, not a dense growing medium. A universal substrate suffocates the roots and causes rot. A dedicated orchid mix is formulated to deliver maximum aeration and rapid drainage. Repot every <strong>two to three years</strong>, when the bark breaks down and loses its open structure.
"Peat-reduced" means that <strong>blonde peat</strong> is partially replaced by renewable raw materials such as mature green compost, <strong>wood fiber</strong>, and <strong>coconut fiber</strong>. The reason is environmental: peat forms over geological timescales in Baltic and German bogs, so reducing its use lowers the ecological footprint of everyday gardening without harming plant performance. A peat-reduced universal mix combines blonde peat, mature green compost, wood fiber, and a natural micronutrient starter. Use it exactly like a standard universal mix — pots, window boxes, balconies, vegetables — <strong>except for acid-loving plants</strong>, which still require a dedicated acid substrate.
