When you choose a professional substrate, you rarely read how the peat at its base was harvested. Yet the extraction method decides much of how the substrate behaves: how much air it holds at the roots, how well it drains, how consistent it is from one batch to the next. The two main routes are block-cut peat and milled peat. Neither is simply “better” or “worse” — they answer different needs. Here’s how they differ and what it means for your crop.

How peat is harvested: blocks or milling

Milled peat is produced by milling the surface layer of the bog: the surface is scarified, left to dry and collected in thin layers, repeatedly over the season. It’s an efficient method at large volumes and yields a fine-particle material.

Block-cut peat is obtained instead by cutting the peat into blocks from the bog profile; the blocks are then dried and mechanically broken down to the required particle sizes. The point isn’t the cutting itself — it’s what the cutting preserves: the peat’s natural fibrous structure, which milling tends to break apart.

What changes for substrate structure

The practical difference comes down to fibrous structure. Block-cutting preserves the long fibres and natural porosity; milling reduces them to a finer, more uniform but structurally more “closed” fraction. Translated into the bag:

  • Air capacity — block-cut peat keeps a higher air porosity, especially when the substrate is wet. That’s what keeps roots oxygenated after a generous watering or a rainy spell.
  • Drainage and waterlogging risk — the fine fraction of milled peat holds more water and can close up under intensive irrigation, raising the risk of waterlogging in long cycles or large pots.
  • Stability over time — an intact fibrous structure slumps and compacts more slowly; a very fine material tends to slump sooner, reducing air space by the end of the cycle.

This doesn’t mean milled peat should be avoided: where you need a fine fraction and high water retention — certain sowings or turf, for instance — it is perfectly suitable. It means the choice should follow the end use, not habit.

A coarser, more fibrous structure is easier to classify into defined particle sizes and to reproduce over time, especially when the raw material comes from the same extraction sites year after year. When to choose one or the other

In short, reason by end use:

  • Production that needs repeatability across many batches → what matters most is continuity of supply and particle-size classification, where block-cutting starts with an advantage.
